Post Malone Is Reaching Peak Post Malone

It’s been a big month for Post Malone. He released his fourth album, Twelve Carat Toothache. He revealed that he and his fiancée, who is not in the public eye, welcomed their first child—a baby girl. He covered Pearl Jam’s “Better Man” on Howard Stern wearing a Gollum T-shirt and a Susan Alexandra beaded lighter holder around his neck, his vocal trills as throaty as ever.

And you know what? Things seem sunny on Posty Avenue. As Post told Stern, he’d had a rough few years, struggling with alcohol and all the other things fame provides in abundance: “It was to a really rough point, and I couldn’t get up off the floor for,” he said. “It was screwdrivers…It was vodka, and it was bodying fifth weeks and trying to hang in there and talking to people who weren’t fucking there.” While he hasn’t ‘t nixed drinking altogether, he added, “I just have super beautiful people around me, and I met a really beautiful person that made me feel like a human being again,” he said of his fiancée, who helped him find balance. ” She saved my fucking life—it’s pretty epic.”

That’s not to say he’s let up on other vices, either. Appearing on the Full Send podcast last week, Posty shared that he still smokes 40 to 45 cigarettes a day—hitting, on at least one occasion, 80 cigs. “It definitely has messed up my voice, but I mean, Johnny Cash smoked his whole life. He sounded cool, you know?” he said. (Post has a tattoo of the Man in Black on his bicep.) “By the time I ask Ben for that second pack I’m like, ‘Alright dude, chill out,’ you know . But by the time I open that third pack I’m like, ‘I’m a total piece of shit and I need to go to sleep.'” But, he concedes in his cheerful Posty way, he has stopped smoking in bed .

“Now I have, like, a special zone that has my PC in it and my Magic the Gathering shit so I just go down there and fucking rip cigs and build decks and die in Apex Legends,he said. Finding the right zone at home is crucial. The gaming zone is for chilling—and for creativity, Post has the bathroom.

“I write all my songs on the can,” Post told Stern, with a laugh. “I’d say about 30 percent of all my albums have been written on the shitter. I’d say 60 percent of lyrics have been written on the shitter…I wouldn’t say it’s a hideaway as much as an oasis.” Find your bliss.
